How to Sew an Invisible Zipper into a Lined Bodice

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

If you've ever tried unsuccessfully to install an invisible zipper into a lined bodice, you know how frustrating it can be. For years, I was afraid to sew a zipper and avoided every pattern that required one. Eventually, I overcame my apprehension, and immediately thought to myself "Why did I wait so long to try this!?"! It was so much easier than I thought it was. The key was having clear instructions...something I now strive to provide in my patterns that call on an invisible zipper closure (the Mira and Festivity Dresses both do).

For some of you,  photos and written instructions aren't enough, so because of the recommendation of many E&E readers, I've filmed a video tutorial.

In this video, I'm using the Mira Dress bodice and detailing steps 8-14, however, this method of construction should work with any other lined bodice.

Keep in mind that the zipper used in this video was already prepared as in the photos below:

In the video, I've already attached my zipper foot. It's just the regular one my machine came with, although, I really should get one of those invisible zipper feet...I've heard they're pretty awesome.
