RBD Knit Love Blog Tour with free Bubble Sleeve Dress pattern

Friday, March 27, 2015

It's a pleasure to be a part of the Riley Blake Designs Knit Love Blog Tour today!  I'm really a huge fan of sewing with knits for children's clothing.  Not only are they very practical, but the garments made from knits are typically quick to sew.  I truly love the clothing I've made for my children from wovens, but honestly, I'm not a fan of ironing out all the wrinkles!  So, you've been seeing a lot of knit garments here lately, and when asked to participate in this tour, I was immediately on board.  I anxiously waited for my package to arrive, and when it did, I was so pleased!  I can say with 100% confidence, that all of the knits I received from Riley Blake Designs were outstanding.  The weight and stretch is perfect for garments, colours were accurate to the online photos, and the shrinkage after washing was minimal.

I love the bright colours for Spring, and so do my children!  They were very excited about these fabrics and even more thrilled once they were made into their new clothes.  My daughter in particular, who is very selective about what she wants to wears these days, is in love with her new dress.  She absolutely loves the 'little 'circly' design and the puffy sleeves'!

For Tobias, I made a very practical long sleeve shirt that's going to get a lot of use.  I need to make him about five more!  The pattern is from one of my Ottobre magazines and he's recently moved up to a size 116.  The fit is just how I like it: just right in the shoulders and length with some room to grow in the arms.

The lime and aqua stripe fabrics worked so well together for this shirt and are perfect for the season.  I used some interfacing behind the pocket (on the inside of the lime) to give a bit more structure and support to the stitches.  I've learned from past experience that it's a good idea not to skip this step in order to get a more professional looking pocket.  The neckband is white ribbing from my stash.

The decorative stitching on the pocket, neckline, and armholes are all from my regular sewing machine.  I love how it looks like it's coverstitching, but it's really not!  I used some neon lime for all the outer stitching which I think is a fun trend and takes me back a few years to those crazy colours I grew up with in the 80s.

Next, is Anja's Vivid Fireworks Grape Knit Bubble Sleeve Dress in a size 5.  Like the other Riley Blake Designs knits, this one was great to work with and I'm very pleased with the result.  It drapes well and has enough weight to give a really nice shape to the gathered bubble sleeves.  If you've been around here long enough, you know I love 'bubbled' fabric (Bubble Pocket ShortsBubble Pocket Top) so I thought, why not bubble some sleeves?!  I also love to give back to a very supportive and vibrant online sewing community, so I'm offering this new pattern as a free gift!

Note that this dress is designed to hit a couple inches above the knee.  If you want it longer than that, you'll need to adjust the length of the pattern accordingly.

Here's a variation of the Bubble Sleeve Dress in Happy Flappers Owl Pink I made as a nightgown using only the sleeve lining and adding a 1.5" (4cm) cuff.  Isn't this fabric adorable?  It's available in two other colours as well at Riley Blake Designs.
